During November 2013, volunteers from the Peer Mentoring Scheme and Change Step participants joined forces to help local councils and community groups tidy up war memorial sites across North Wales in preparation of Remembrance Sunday.

Five memorial sites in Flint, Chirk, Tralogan, Gwespor and Rhyl benefited from the Change Step volunteering days – something which the Change Step team hopes to build on as their project continues.

“Change Step volunteers have been undertaking a range of fundraising and awareness raising activities across north Wales over the past few months. Community engagement is essential in raising the profile of veterans in our communities and helps communicate the message and recruit new volunteers to the scheme as well as providing support at grass roots level” – Geraint Jones, CAIS Director of Residential Services

During 2013 “Volunteers from CAIS’ Peer Mentoring scheme have transformed the Community and Memorial Gardens in Chirk and their work has been greatly appreciated and warmly received by the community. Dedicated teams of volunteers such as those working with the Peer Mentoring Scheme make an incredible difference and I’ve been extremely grateful for their valuable contribution in helping communities with tasks that many residents who visit the gardens, through old age and ill health, would have found difficult. The camaraderie amongst volunteers was very evident on all of the work parties with everyone clearly having a great time! As Keep Wales Tidy Project Officer for Wrexham I very much look forward to working with volunteers from the Peer Mentoring Scheme and Change Step in the future”  – Shane Hughes, Keep Wales Tidy Project Officer

Throughout its duration, the Peer Mentoring Scheme organised over 100 volunteering days across North Wales which have included litter picks, gardening projects and painting sessions.
