Over the last 11 months veterans across north Wales have helped to tidy over a thousand war graves with the Remember our Heroes project.

With the help of the Armed Forces Community Covenant Grant the Change Step team liaised with the Commonwealth War Grave Commission, local councils and the Bangor and St Asaph Diocese to locate the 2,000 war graves in North Wales. With 6 volunteering days each month the team have visited 42 cemeteries and tended to 1,033 war graves since May 2014. Although the funding for the Remember our Heroes project has finished the Change Step team hope to continue volunteering in the local community;

“I am proud to have been involved with the Remember Our heroes project. Coordinating a vast array of veterans varying in age, skills, experience and gender has been rewarding. Watching the volunteers grow in self confidence and develop throughout the project has been incredibly rewarding. We’re currently volunteering at the Blind Veterans centre in Llandudno where we are helping them to develop their sensory gardens.” Ronnie Devlin, Change Step activity and event co-ordinator.

“It has been an honour and a privilege taking part in the Remember Our Heroes project. Remembering the heroes who put their lives on the line so that we could live in the democracy we live in now. Change Step volunteers and myself have tended to many war graves over the months throughout North Wales. Each grave tended, has been and will forever be the last post.” Mike Davies, Change Step Volunteer.

Change Step is a peer mentoring and advice service delivered by veterans for other veterans who wish to make positive changes in their lives. The service aims to support those seeking help for problems encountered as a result of military or operational duty through peer support, training opportunities and signposting to relevant health and welfare services. Examples of issues faced by veterans can include homelessness, unemployment, mental health problems and substance misuse issues.

The Remember our Heroes team would like to thank the staff at Barclays and the Welsh Government who joined us on many of our volunteering days. The team also received support from Keep Wales Tidy, Peter Lucas Tool Hire in Llandudno Junction and Crest.
